Turning Good into Greater Good
The Bluest Eye, published in 1970, was author and Nobel Prize winner Toni Morrison’s first novel. Set in Ohio in 1941, the story centers around a young girl whose self-confidence is eroded because she is consistently told she is ugly because she is Black. These constant racial insults fuel her desire for blue eyes which she equates with whiteness and beauty.
Morrison wrote this book to give voice to Black girlhood and to remind readers of ‘how hurtful racism is’. An examination of beauty and conformity, she writes that Blacks feel ‘apologetic about the fact that their skin is so dark.’
It has been a controversial book since its debut, banned in many states off and on over the years due to its explicit description of racism and bias and childhood sexual abuse. It continues to be on the banned book list in many states.
