The Spirit of St. Louis Women’s Fund (SOS) is a powerful women’s collective giving organization in the Greater St. Louis area with over 200 active members. Each year, SOS awards grants to small non-profits with operating budgets of less than $1.5 million whose needs are often unmet to positively effect change in our communities, and to support work that creates safer, healthier, and more equitable communities.
Since its founding in 2006, SOS members have personally invested more than $3.4 million in the St. Louis community, benefitting 106 agencies. Members contribute an equal amount annually - and have an equal voice/vote in the organizations selected to receive these grants - through a process of rigorous vetting fueled by a highly informed, knowledgeable membership. This allows SOS to identify unmet needs in the St. Louis community or to act as an incubator, often funding nonprofits in their startup phase. SOS also works to inform and educate both members and non-members about the issues facing our region through events and book discussions. Past topics have included immigration, community health, affordable housing, sex trafficking, food deserts, and the impact of parental incarceration on children.
